English transcript:
Hi, I’m Lauren (name sign “L” on chest). I am hearing and my family is hearing, so American Sign Language is not my first language. I am a high school student. Last year I took an ASL 1 class, I am currently taking ASL 2, and I want to become an ASL interpreter. I am a senior now, so next year I will be going to college. Though I am not yet certain where I will be going, I was accepted into RIT’s interpreting program. Wherever I choose to go, I will continue to learn about ASL, Deaf culture and interpreting and will experience so much personal growth.
For my 3-month internship, everyday I observe interpreters in the classroom and take notes. Sometimes while I’m watching I notice a particular sign and think, wow! I love that! I want to show people that sign. ASL is a beautiful language, and as I continue to learn and grow, I want to share it with you all. From now until the end of my internship I’m starting “This Week’s Words,” which is a sequence of short videos sharing my favorite signs of the week. Whether they are cool, new, fascinating or weird, each week I will share 5 more signs.
For more about the CAPStone Internship Program and who I am, click here. This will certainly be a journey, and I am excited to see how I learn, change and grow. Thank you so much for watching "This Week's Words." Enjoy!
