Hi! My name is Lauren, and I am currently a Senior at Newton North High School. For the past few years, I have become very passionate about learning American Sign Language. I first learned ASL from a Deaf student, as we became fast friends on a carpentry service trip to New Orleans. In order to communicate with him directly, I decided to take ASL 1, and then ASL 2, at my school. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to work with a team of EDCO faculty members to offer live ASL interpretation for two musicals at my school, as well as co-interpret a performance at the Boston Children’s Museum. I look forward to learning more about the history, culture and language of the Deaf in college!
CAPS Proposal For my internship, I will be shadowing three ASL interpreters who work in the EDCO program at my school. In calculus, physics and English classes, I will observe their different interpreting styles. I am excited to hear about their unique journeys and lessons learned along the way. As there are many different career paths, and a huge unmet need for, ASL interpreters, I can’t wait to see where this internship leads me! |
